New Orleans
Parrot Head Club
Giving Back!
The New Orleans Parrothead Club (NOPHC)
chapter of the
PHiP was created to promote friendships and organize social activities for people
with similar interests, including enjoyment of the tropical spirit of Jimmy Buffett's music.
In addition, the nophcis a non-profit corporation and encourages its members
to participate in a variety of volunteer efforts in the local, regional and national community
for social and environmental causes.
In the process of making new friends and having fun, we believe in
leaving something positive behind. Our club is open to anyone with the tropical spirit
and desire to contribute to the betterment of their communities.
Here is a list of some of the Community Service Activities we have
participated in:
Sheila Chimento's article for the Coconut Telegraph:
Parrot Heads Give Their Blood, Sweat & Cheers!!

French Quarter Fest Parade
The NOPHC provides volunteers who give up a morning of work to support this
community event which is designed to bring Tourism into the city over a special
four day weekend.

Jazz Fest
We provide volunteers as traffic marshalls for the New Orleans Jazz & Hertiage Festival.

Run for Covenant House
We provide volunteers to supplement the Margaritaville Staff during their "Run for
Covenant House." Covenant House is a local organization dedciated to helping homeless
children. You can find their website at
http://www.covenanthouseno.org/.

Blood Drive for Justin Burns
This is probably our most successful charity project to date. Justin Burns is a
young man who is the son of two of our members. Justin was diagnosed with Luekemia
this year and unfortunately his parent's insurance does not cover blood supplies,
which Luekemia patients use a lot of. The nophchas stepped up to not only have members
give blood (some on a regular and repeat basis) but also spread the word to our
fellow Parrotheads around the country. Justin's parents have reported that the
outpouring of support has been overwhelming (both locally and from across the country)
and is making a very positive impact on their situation.

Alzheimer's Walk
The NOPHC fields a team for the Annual Alzheimer's Walk.

The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation
A membership-based citizens' organization, it is the public's independent voice
dedicated to restoring and preserving the Lake Pontchartrain Basin.
Through coordination of restoration activities, education, advocacy,
monitoring of the regulatory process, and citizen action, the Lake
Pontchartrain Basin Foundation works in partnership with all segments of the
community to reclaim the waters of the Basin for this and future generations.
Walk to benefit the New Orleans Mission Homeless Shelter
The nophcfields a small team for this walk and holds a "Bar Crawl"
fund-raiser to support the New Orleans Mission's Thanksgiving program.
Through the fund-raiser alone, the NOPHC was able to feed 100 homeless people
last Thanksgiving.

Protect Endangered Species at EcologyFund.com
Mexico is one of the five most biologically diverse countries on earth, home to 1/10
of all land species, (many of which live nowhere else). EcologyFund is helping
Pronatura (Mexico's largest conservation organization) and The Wildlands Project
(Pronatura's partner in the Sierra Madre Mexican Thick-billed parrot project)
protect some of Mexico's most endangered species by conserving imperiled habitats.
The Nature Conservancy (www.nature.org) is helping Pronatura purchase the Cuatro
Cienegas property.

The Hunger Site
Every 3.6 seconds, someone dies of hunger. 75% are children. You can make a difference.
Visit The Hunger Site
every day and donate cups of food for the world's hungry -- at no cost to you.
When you click on the "Give Free Food" button on the home page of The Hunger Site, funding
is generated for the purchase and distribution of staple food to those in need. Funds are paid
by site sponsors. In 2000, daily clicks yielded over $3.4 million for the frontline hunger
relief organizations working to provide food and hope to the hungry around the world.
That's over 20 million pounds of food made possible by people like you, who simply took a
moment to click a button each day.

The Stanford Alzheimer and Amyloidogenic Disease Research Program
The Intel® Philanthropic Peer-to-Peer Program combats life-threatening illnesses by
linking millions of PCs like yours into one of the most powerful computing resources in
the world. This "virtual supercomputer" uses
peer-to-peer technology to make unprecedented amounts of processing power
available to medical researchers, thus accelerating the development of
treatments and drugs with the potential to cure diseases.
The nophcsupports the The
Stanford Alzheimer and Amyloidogenic Disease Research Program through The
Intel® Philanthropic Peer-to-Peer Program. Currently, the NOPHC members have ten
(10) PC's through The Intel®
Philanthropic Peer-to-Peer Program & The Stanford Alzheimer and
Amyloidogenic Disease Research Program. You can take part in this
ground-breaking Internet-based project by lending your PC's unused resources
to the greater good. There's no cost to download and run the program, and no
noticeable impact on your computer's performance, because the medical research
programs take advantage only of processing power you're not using. Learn
more about the protein misfolding work being done by at Stanford University

Stanford website now. To put your PC to work on this project, go to

Hard Rock Cafe Benefit for New York Vicitims of September 11th
New Orleans Parrotheads participated in a very quickly put together "Relief Party" at the
Hard Rock Cafe for New York victims of September 11th. Relief supplies and cash donations
were gathered at the event and sent directly to the Hard Rock Cafe in New York where it
was distributed directly to people in need after the event. This was also the start of
the NOPHC's "Be a Patriot" campaign where our club encouraged our club members (and their
friends and families) to go out and eat at a local restaurant or do one "tourist like"
activity to help stimulate the New Orleans economy which took a beating following September 11th.
